JOJO Has Undergone Many Changes Over the Years

Joensuu region public transport was reformed on July 1, 2014. The reform was driven by changes in EU and national legislation regarding public transport services. Following the reform, public transport in many large and medium-sized urban areas has been organized into broader regional entities. In the Joensuu region, the cooperation includes the city of Joensuu and the municipalities of Kontiolahti and Liperi.

Development of Routes and Schedules

Over the past 10 years, the public transport routes and schedules have been developed to meet changing needs. In the first full year of operation in 2015, JOJO buses traveled a total of nearly 3.1 million kilometers. By 2023, this figure had increased to 3.7 million kilometers, representing an increase of almost 20 percent.

Introduction of the New Waltti Ticket

Joensuu was among the first cities to introduce the new nationwide Waltti ticket. In August 2014, 1,800 Waltti cards were piloted for schoolchildren in Joensuu, Kontiolahti, and Liperi. The sale of other Waltti cards began at Carelicum Services in January 2015. The ticket system has been developed continuously, with new products introduced along the way. The latest innovation is the introduction of contactless payment in December 2023, which makes paying for individual journeys easier.

Over the past ten years, the number of ticket sales points has increased. Additionally, electronic services now play a significant role in ticket purchasing and travel information. Tickets can now be purchased from the online store or the Waltti Mobile app. The route guide and real-time bus tracking information are also available in Waltti Mobile. The latest update includes JOJO transport information now available on Google Maps.

Development of Travel Volumes

The development of services, as well as ticket and information systems, has significantly increased travel in the JOJO area. In the first full year of operation, approximately 2.0 million journeys were made. Before the pandemic, the number of journeys had risen to 2.4 million. In 2020 and 2021, travel decreased significantly, but since then, the number of journeys has increased annually, reaching approximately 2.7 million in 2023. This represents a 33 percent increase from the first year of operation.

Increase of Clean Fleet in the JOJO Area

At the start of the new service in 2014, there were 27 diesel buses in operation. In the summer of 2022, 13 electric buses were introduced following a local transportation tender. Other local transport buses have used renewable diesel (HVO) since winter 2023.

In the summer of 2025, the entire JOJO fleet in the Joensuu, Kontiolahti, and Liperi areas will operate on clean fuels: electricity, gas, and HVO. According to the latest tender, the total number of buses starting next summer will be 54.
